Hi! I’m Ian.
My piano lessons focus on developing creative musicianship alongside performance skills.
Lessons are student-centered and personalized, rooted in my knowledge and love of creating and playing music, and encourage lifelong music making.
As a musician and teacher, I’m serious about helping students along their musical path—but I also know that sometimes the best way to do that is by being a little goofy. Lessons should be fun, because music is fun!

In lessons, we follow a natural progression: first listening and internalizing, then playing and improvising, and finally, when it makes sense, learning to read and write music. This sound-before-symbol approach is supported by the most recent, cutting-edge research on how we learn music—and it leads to deeper understanding, greater creativity, and more joyful music-making.
Rather than starting with note reading, we build a rich vocabulary of rhythm and tonal patterns—the essential building blocks of music. As students begin to recognize and play with these patterns, they develop confidence in improvising, composing, and playing by ear. This foundation leads to more expressive playing and a much stronger understanding of how music works.

My approach to teaching is rooted in the belief that music is first and foremost something we hear, feel, and create—not just something we read from a page. Just as children naturally learn to speak before they learn to read, young musicians benefit most when they first listen, move, and play before tackling written notation.
What Students Gain
Through this process, students grow into functional, expressive, and musically literate pianists. They learn to play by ear, improvise with ease, and compose and arrange their own music. They develop the ability to listen deeply and understand what they hear, laying the groundwork for fluent music reading and writing.
As their skills mature, they play with technical ease, perform in both solo and ensemble settings, and express music in a natural, flowing way. When they do begin to read music, they do so with understanding and context—because the music already lives in their mind and body.

Set For Success
Each lesson is filled with movement, singing, and joyful exploration. Students chant rhythm patterns in different meters, sing in various tonalities, and move using flow and weight to internalize the feel of music. They gain physical ease at the piano, learning how to approach the keyboard and choose fingerings with purpose.
As they grow, students begin to "think" pieces in their heads, connect rhythm to steady beat, and notice details like tempo, dynamics, and phrasing. With this kind of musical grounding, improvisation comes naturally—because the music is already inside them.

Classical
If you’re passionate about classical music,
or simply want to explore it more deeply,
we’ll work on developing your technique,
interpretation, and expressive range. We’ll
study the great composers—not just how
to play their music, but how to
understand it. You’ll learn how form,
harmony, and texture shape a piece, and
how your own musical voice brings it to
life.
We can also explore historical skills like
ornamentation, figured bass, or
improvisation in classical styles (including
partimenti, for those who want to go
Jazz Piano
Want to explore jazz? We’ll work on lead sheets,
chord voicings, improvisation, and building a strong
rhythmic and harmonic foundation. You’ll develop
your ear, expand your harmonic palette, and learn
how to listen and respond in the moment. Whether
you’re just starting with jazz or looking to deepen
your skills, we’ll meet you where you are.
Pop, Rock, & Folk Piano
Love popular music? Great! We’ll dive into the
songs you care about and use them to grow
your musicianship. You’ll learn how to play
from chord charts, create your own
arrangements, and develop solid rhythm and
voicing skills. We’ll also explore ear training,
transcribing, and even creating mashups or
covers if that excites you.
Singer-Songwriter Support
If you’re writing your own music, I can help you develop your songwriting craft, support
your voice at the piano, and explore arranging or recording. We’ll work on lyric writing,
song form, harmony, and keyboard technique tailored to your musical style. You don’t
need to be an expert pianist to benefit—these lessons are about making your ideas
work.
Your Artistic Voice
Intermediate and advanced lessons are flexible, challenging, and artistically rich. This is where your musical identity really starts to take shape.
